Today marks twenty-four years since you left us. It feels like only yesterday that I held you close at Charles de Gaulle Airport, saying goodbye and kissing you, never imagining it would be the last time. It was our final family vacation. You were heading back to Miami to prepare for your next record attempt in the Dominican Republic, while we still had a few days ahead of us in Palavas with your maternal grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins before returning to Mexico. You had come to spend time with us for your cousin Karine’s wedding to José and took the opportunity to make a quick trip to Palavas. You managed to see the whole family. Who could have imagined that it would be our last vacation together?
Twenty-four years without you, and I have thought of you every single day since that fateful day you set off on your final journey—the one from which no one ever returns, the definitive one that marks the end of our time on earth. There is no set age for taking that last train, yet you still had so many beautiful things left to do in life.
This October 12th, we will be in Veracruz, by the sea. Your cousin Dominique will be with us, and I am glad she will be by our side on this day of remembrance. We will not be alone as we recall the memories that still flood our minds—hers, ours, and the life you lived during the years we shared.
You are so present in our daily lives! I hope it stays that way until the end of our days. I am saying goodbye for now, my dear, but I am only parting from you on paper; in my heart, you remain forever.
